View From the 5th Grade Trenches: October 2012 Halloween Lit

I'm over being silly this week on Charlie Holmberg's blog.

I profess to being a Halloween nut. I love the spooky factor. I love the snap of fall in the air. I love any and all things pumpkin. I love seeing teeny tiny superheroes come a-knockin' at my door. Did I mention the candy?

Most of all, I love Halloween stories. Here are a few of the faves from the 5th Grade Trenches.

A new discovery for this year is a hilarious parody of Madeline by Rick Walton and Nathan Hale.

And some returning hits...

What are some of your faves?

  5. Hallo Weiner!! Ha! I actually had a Bassett//Daschund mix name Oscar Meyer Weiner as my first dog...

Why are there so many holidays involving candy?? I've given up the diet.

You're all over the blogosphere this week! Way to go!

    1. Hey Michelle - I hear ya. I have zero self-control when it comes to candy in the house.

  6. I don't really have any fave Halloween stories but I probably enjoyed some stories set around Halloween from the Point book series, when I was a middle-grade/YA back in the day. :)

  7. Good suggestions! I've always thought the Fall of the House of Usher was excellent and creepy. My latest short story collection also has some Halloween tales in it, so of course I'm partial to those. ;)

  8. Oh Man, I love the Little Old Lady Who Wasn't Afraid of Anything! Another one was Halloween with Morris & Boris. I read that one over and over and over. :)

  9. Good suggestions. Growing up we were kept away from spooky tales but I more than make up for it now!

    Happy Halloween!

  10. Hi Leslie,
I'm not really big on Halloween (apart from the candy) but some of these titles look irresistible - like the Madeline parody - must read that. Thanks for the list =)

  11. The Little Old Lady... is one of our favorites, too! Mostly we like movies for Halloween. We always watch Ichabod Crane and sometimes Poltergeist or even Jaws. Even my littler kids like those movies. They laugh out loud when they can see the hinge on the shark's jaw. When I was a kid, that movie scared the crap out of me.

  18. I'd forgotten the Ray Bradbury book! Thanks so much for reminding me about it. I'm off to dig it out of the back of my closet.

Hope your Halloween was great. Now it's on to turkey season. Poor turkeys. Little do they suspect.

  19. Great book picks! But I didn't know about the parody of Madeline. I'll have to find that. I love Halloween, too. I hope yours was spooky and fun!
