T is for Torchwood

Twenty-Six Days of Creative Inspiration

Yes, I'm sharing more BBC love. If you don't know Torchwood, you have just hit sci-fi gold. This kickin' show only had a two season, plus bonus mini-series run*, which is a crime to rival the one season lifespan of Firefly.

Torchwood is an organization, separate from the government, created by Queen Victoria to protect the British Empire from alien threats. You all remember studying Torchwood in your world history class, right?

Today Torchwood guards the pesky rift in time and space that runs through Cardiff and lets all manner of aliens and supernatural annoyances through. The diverse, and I do mean diverse, characters, Captain Jack, Ianto, Gwen, Owen, and Tosh, make up the only barrier between us and any alien nere-do-wells that want to invade our good Earth.

Captain Jack Harkness, who hails from the 51st century, leads this band of warriors. He originated on Dr. Who** and is as brave and daring as any hero in my playbook. I'll gladly stand behind him when the alien invasion comes.

Thank you, Queen Victoria for having the foresight to protect the Earth.

*I'm not counting the BBC America incarnation of Torchwood. My loyalties lie with the classic BBC version.

**If you are not familiar with Dr. Who, come back on "W" day to meet him.

  4. How have I never heard of this??? And I have been shamed for my T post on Time Travel, many shocked commenters who have asked by Dr Who was not on my list.

I shall be rectifying these two massive holes in my SF life as soon as possible! I just looked up TARDIS, for instance, and was shocked that I have not yet encountered this fabulous living sort of time travel!

  5. I love(d) Doctor Who (I haven't followed the Matt Smith seasons because of wonky scheduling in Canada and PVR fail) but I never actually got around to watching Torchwood. It's on Netflix now though, so perhaps it's time I changed that.

  6. Another to add to the Netflix queue. I'm more into fantasy, but seems there's a fine line sometimes between it and sci-fi. Guess I just like time travel.

  7. Love BBCA (which is the only way we get to see such wonders) and loved the little bit of Torchwood we were all allowed. Gwen is such a bad-ass! We're also Dr. Who fans. Thanks for the tip-o'-the-hat!

  10. I love Torchwood. Absolutely love it. It's one of my top favorite all-time sci-fi's. I will mourn Firefly forever ... Sigh.

  15. Love, love, love Torchwood. Was so bummed they shut it down. I agree that's as sad as pulling the plug on Firefly (and My So-Called Life, which wasn't sci-fi but sure was good).

  16. I've never seen either version, but reading the description makes me wonder why. It sounds awesome!

  17. Somebody has to protect us from aliens. But who will protect us from ourselves?

  20. I've never heard of it!

I grew up on Dr Who, but when I moved to the states from England, no one had heard of it. Now it's all the trend here.

I used to play Dr Who with my brother and cousins. I was the only girl in the group, so I got to be Sarah. My oldest cousin was always the Doctor, and my brother and other cousin were the daleks. They hated that they always got stuck with that role. :D
