B is for Broadway

Twenty-Six Days of Creative Inspiration

I've been singing show tunes as long as I can remember. From Rogers and Hammerstein to Andrew Lloyd Webber I've never met a musical I didn't like. I believe music is the key to unlock the heartsong of the human condition. I dare you to listen to "If I Loved You" from Carousel, "For Good" from Wicked, or "Bring Him Home" from Les Miserables and not be moved.

Next on my must see list are Book of Mormon and American Idiot. How about you?

  1. I have to agree that I have never seen a musical I didn't enjoy! Just saw 'Shakespeare Alone' in London this past weekend, but won't be near a big city for a while so my next musical will have to wait!

    1. Is my jealousy showing? I'd love to see that show. My kids and I have a goal of flying across the pond to see shows in London. My son want to hit Cardiff to satisfy his Torchwood obsession.

  2. I completely agree. I was lucky enough to grow up in the NYC suburbs and to have a mom who loved theater. I knew the Les Miz soundtrack by heart at age 16 and still sing On My Own in the shower. And from Wicked, Defying Gravity always gets me. Book of Mormon is on my list, too.

  3. Hey there! I referenced you on my blog yesterday! :) As far as Broadway goes ... I'm just not a huge fan of theater. Sorry! I try so hard to "get it" but I'm just not ... educated enough (?) to appreciate it.

  4. I LOVE Broadway and just wish I could afford to see more shows! Book of Mormon is on my list too and I can't wait to see it. :)

  5. When I was a kid in NYC I missed Broadway entirely. My parents didn't take me. Sometimes I catch a show in Miami. I don't think it's the same, though.

  7. I loved Wicked! Miss Saigon was very powerful, too. Believe it or not, I haven't seen Les Miserables or Phantom yet, so those are next on my list. I'd also go see Wicked again if it came around here again.

  8. You actually want to see The Book of Mormon the musical? I'll admit, there are some catchy tunes, but the play is full of foul language and as a Mormon myself, it rubs me the wrong way.

But I love all the other plays you mentioned. My fav is Les Miserables. It is coming to Thousand Oaks later this year I believe. As is Dreamgirls.

  9. I've only seen Phantom of the Opera, and LOVED it. It was all I could do to NOT belt out the tunes :)

  11. I've never been a fan of musicals - I know, how uncultured! I just have a hard time sitting still that long, I guess.

  15. I ADORE musicals! When I was a teen a I listened to Hello Dolly, Cabaret, Sound of Music, etc. in my room and sing at the top of my lungs. On my 27th birthday hubby took me to see A Chorus Line. Since then I've seen Cats, Chicago, Phantom of the Opera, West Side Story, Camelot, Hairspray, Fantasticks, South Pacific, Cats. This year I'm going to Boston to see Billy Elliot!

  16. I love live musicals - I haven't been to one in years and feel ashamed :( Orphan Annie was so much fun and so much better on Broadway than as a movie. I used to play the Cats theme song over and over AND over again. (I'm a bit of a melancholy temperament). And Les Mis - oh.... Les Mis.

  17. Musicals have a special place in my heart. I married the Benny Southstreet (I was Adelaide) of my HS Guys and Dolls production. The month we were married, he was Sky and I was Sarah in our college production. (Our last child is named Sarah Brown ;) So, yeah.

There are so many shows I'd love to see, so many I still want to be in before I'm too old to play anything but an old lady! I've yet to see CATS live, and I've wanted to since I was a kid. We're going to KC to see Narnia the Musical tomorrow night, and I'm really looking forward to that--we may produce it at our children's theater in the fall.

I have to credit Mrs. Clarke (my beloved 5th grade teacher) for starting my obsession with music and dance. She took a group of us to see Bob Fosse's Dancin'. I was hooked.

    Thanks for this gush-worthy post!
