S is for Star Wars

Twenty-Six Days of Creative Inspiration

A long time ago in a galaxy far far way, a boyfriend dragged me to what I thought was a stupid war movie.
After two hours in line and two hours in the theatre, I was helping Luke Skywalker blow up the Death Star with the secret controls in the armrest of the theatre seat.

I am a Star Wars fanatic, and proud of it. There was something magical about Luke leaving home to learn the ways of the force as I was leaving home to learn the ways of college.

After thirty-five years my love for the Star Wars universe has never waned, even through Phantom Menace and Attack of the Clones.

One of the thrills of my life is when I met Mark Hamill last year. He is a gentleman Jedi to be sure.

Star Wars filled me with a sense of wonder that long ago summer of 1977, and the saga still resonates with me today. I've always loved sci-fi, but Star Wars made me want to write sci-fi.

For the record, The Empire Strikes Back is my favorite of all the movies.

Do you feel the force?

  1. How cool that you got to meet Mark. :)

This is terrible, but I've only watched snippets of the movies. I've never seen a whole movie. I keep meaning to see the films and haven't done so yet.

  2. Leslie: I LOVE Star Wars. So glad you posted this as your "s" word. Empire Strikes Back is my favorite as well. This is where Luke finds out that Vader is his father and where we meet the amazing Yoda. I love the first battle scene with the Impirial Walkers in the snow. So cool!

  3. We took our two oldest daughters (then 8 & 4, I think)to see The Return of the Jedi, so they feel the force more than I do. Love your photos with Luke Skywalker!

  4. The first Star Wars movie I saw was The Phantom Menace. I saw it in the theater when I was four years old, and ever since then, the Star Wars saga has been my all time favorite movie. I've gone so far that I've read a bunch of the books and they're all amazing! And my mom and I both love the Clone Wars TV show, too, lol.
My favorite movie of the series is probably... Revenge of the Sith. It's so sad, but I love it!! Great S post!!

I feel the force and will always be a Jedi :)

  7. You are going to want to kill me! I fell asleep during the one and only Star Wars movie I've been to. John and I were celebrating our 10th anniversary on Catalina Island, and the one and only theatre (the old casino) was playing...I think it was Empire Strikes Back. John liked it but I took a nice little nap.

Next time I see you, I'm wearing armor :)

  9. Hail Jedis. Here's a "Leslie is a Star Wars geek" fun fact. I have a collection of memorabilia that was valuable enough to count toward my net worth when I bought my house.

  10. I have always loved Star Wars! There are so many great elements to the movies and I get really into them. How cool that you met "Luke". He does the audio for the Spiderwick Chronicles and does an amazing job. May the force be with you.

  11. We finally rode the new Star Tours at Disneyland. Its a great ride and well worth the wait of having it shut down for a makeover.

  12. I must be one of the few people that loves all six of the Star Wars movies, although the first three put out by George Lucas are my MOST FAVE. May the force be with you, Leslie, as your collection is with your net worth. Smokin'!

  15. That is so uber cool you met Mark Hamill!! Its funny cuz I've always wondered what became of him. I'd love to hear what brought you to that day.... won't you please post the story and tell us all about it???That would be very cool!
Yep, I grew up watching the original SW movies in the theatres as a child and they were just part of the pop culture of the time for me. It wasn't until after college that I really got into the film stories. I remember having a SW marathon one day with the original trilogy and just being so wrapped up in it. And even tho the first 3 episodes never lived up to the final 3, it was fun just continuing the story in reverse. I"m glad they were released the way they were. Can you imagine watching it and already knowing Vader was Luke's father??? Wouldn't have been nearly as cool.

  16. Ooh lucky you met him! I had a big crush on him when I was little. Who didn't?

  17. Not sure I felt the force but I sure feel the natural humour and sway in your writing! Such a pleasure finding your blog - I've seen your face on many of the comments and was, like, HERE she is when I came across your blog! How great that you got to meet Luke! I admit, I'm a closet fan of Star Wars. I've seen all the movies - many times over - and the original ones were seen at a special screening where they had programs and intermissions and, yes, arm controls for fighting Darth Vader. May the A to Z force be with you!!!!

  18. Love love love Star Wars! So cool that you got to meet Luke, er, Mark Hamill in person. My 4-year-old boy loves Star Wars so much he once asked me if we could go find Luke Skywalker so Luke could teach him how to make his own lightsaber. :)

  19. Awesome that you got to meet Mark. I loved the original. It was magical. I also really liked the Empire Strikes back. I think we waited in line for 4 hours.

  20. More Star Wars tidbits - I saw the original A New Hope, Episode IV, in movie theaters 21 times when it first came out. I go back to the theater whenever a Star Wars film is rereleased. I saw the fantastic STAR WARS IN CONCERT that is touring with a live orchestra, movie clips from all 6 films, and Anthony Daniels as the narrator. AMAZING.

  22. That is so cool that you met Mark Hamill! And what a good girlfriend that you stood in line two hours for a movie you didn't even want to see! :)

  24. Final Star Wars nugget: When I was going to UCLA, I worked in a big movie theater in Westwood. I actually sat next to Mark Hamill at a premier for the movie, "Who's Killing the Great Chefs of Europe." I was too chicken to speak to him, but I did bump his arm several times on purpose.

  25. Oh yes, Empire is my favorite one too, and the Phantom Menace is my least favorite. Clearly, being called "Annie" is the reason why Annakin turned to the Dark Side. AGGGGHHH.

  26. Ha ha I just read your additional Star Wars nuggets!

  27. Big fan of those original 3 movies. Not those later ones though. The newer ones are missing plot and character.

How cool you got to meet Mark Hamill! I had a crush on him after the 1st movie. I had his doll, which was a much better guy for my Barbies than Ken.

  28. Awesome post...
I always associate star wars with the catchphrase " ...beam me up Scotty..."

    1. Hey Michelle, *whispers from behind hand* that is a Star Trek phrase. I wouldn't want you to be shunned at Comic Con. :)
