And now back to our regularly scheduled programming...
Yes, I'm a fangirl. Star Wars, Lord of the Rings, Comic Con, Dr. Who, Firefly, The Avengers...
This weekend my daughter (Yes, I've raised a second generation fangirl) and I reveled in a Lord of the Rings marathon - all extended versions - at the Arclight movie theatre as we gear up for The Hobbit. Total Middle Earth immersion. There really is nothing like seeing films on the big screen.
Today, on his birthday I want to salute the person who awakened my fangirl self, lo those many years ago:
Donny Osmond
I have no proof, but I'm fairly certain he was singing Puppy Love to me. I was in hog heaven back on March 15, 1972 when D.J., Robert W. Morgan, played Puppy Love for 90 minutes straight on KHJ radio in Los Angeles.
A lifelong dream came true this week when I FINALLY got to see Donny Osmond perform live on stage in:
It was AMAZING. I sang, I swooned, I was inspired. The performances by both Donny and Marie were stellar. So many times we build idols up in our minds to a place impossible to live up to. Not so in this case. Donny surpassed my wildest expectations. I hereby nominate him for national treasure.
Happy Birthday, Donny.
Who makes your fangirl/fanboy heart go pitter patter? Any stories to share?
I was a total N*SYNC fangirl in high school. I can't wait to watch the Hobbit! LOTR and Star Wars are also on my fangirl list. Oh, and Batman!
ReplyDeleteHow could I forget the caped crusader! When I was a kid Batman and Robin came to our local movie theater. I still have the autographed pic.
DeleteI used to crush on Donny. Hmmmm. Who makes my heart go pitter patter (other than my husband)? Well, I saw Rise of the Guardian on Friday. And let's just say the Tooth Fairy's helpers aren't the only one crushing on Jack Frost. :D
ReplyDeleteI think I crush on Donny more now than I did back in the day.
DeleteI don't know why not, but I'm not much of a fangirl. There are authors and actors and musicians I admire, but that's about it. Wish I had stories to share, too!
ReplyDeleteHit an SCBWI conference. You can go all fangirl on lots of awesome authors at one of those.
DeleteAw, what a great memory! I'm glad seeing and hearing Donny in person was worth the wait. And I can't wait until my kids are old enough to have a LOTR marathon. By then it will include all the Hobbit movies too.
ReplyDeleteThat's a lot of popcorn :)
DeleteHow cool! I used to have Donny & Marie barbie dolls and would make them sing to my 45 recording of Paper Roses!
ReplyDeleteWhat! Donny and Marie barbie dolls! Must have. Must have.
DeleteI have a crush on nearly every actor/character in LOTR. Okay, maybe Legolas more than the others...
ReplyDeleteYou can have Legolas and I'll take Aragorn or Faramir or Boromir or Eomer or...
DeleteI think we were separated at birth! I adored Donny Osmond when I was a kid. I had all the albums and played them on my purple plastic record player. Surprisingly, they didn't sound bad at all. :) I bet you watched their show too! A little bit country... :)
ReplyDeleteI'm a little jealous of the purple record player. MIne was boring beige.
DeleteKHJ!!! OMG, I totally remember that station! For me, it was all about Shawn Cassidy. I knew he'd love me if only he would discover my 12 year old self.
ReplyDeleteI had a brief fangirl fling with David Cassidy. "Knock three times..."
DeleteAw, that's so awesome that you and your daughter watched LOTR together! ;)
ReplyDeleteI done raised my chillens right.
DeleteWow, that's a long time to be a fan girl!
ReplyDeleteI had my big love of Duran Duran back in the day. I don't know if I'd want to see them again. Guess I'm a fickle fan!
I'm nothing if not loyal.
DeleteOh, I would have geared up for The Hobbit with you too! lol.
ReplyDeleteI'm not sure about the fan girl thing--there are so many actors and musicians that I would love to meet! :P
My list is long and completely unrealistic.
DeleteI'm a Daniel Day Lewis groupie, especially after Last of the Mohicans. I think I saw it ten times.
ReplyDeleteI WILL FIND YOU. Yes, I had to go there.
DeleteI'm a fangirl too. I love all those things you listed. It's good to pass fangirliness down to the next generation too. I approve! :)
ReplyDeleteMy son is into comics and my daughter surpasses my fangirlness with gusto. I'm the luckiest mom in the world.
DeleteHow cool that you and your daughter get to share a fangirl passion together! When I was little I had Donny and Marie Barbie dolls. :) They were the first ones I had. They even had microphones. Loved them!
ReplyDeleteHow did I miss those dolls? You and Laurisa will have to get together and play barbies.
DeleteThe LOTR movie marathon sounds awesome! I honestly can't wait for The Hobbit :) Not a total fan-girl, but I do love them!
ReplyDeleteI sense an inner fangirl trying to break free.
DeleteYou know who's at the top of my fangirl list. Unfortunately, he's only to be found in the pages of a book!!! Oh I would love to see the three LOTR movies on the big screen in prep for the Hobbit. I am actually considering buying a pair of elf ears for the Hobbit midnight showing. Should I do it???
ReplyDeleteYES to the ears. Don't forget your elven cloak in case it's cold, or you have to hide from dark forces.
DeleteTHE HOBBIT is going to be our Christmas Eve movie this year (otherwise we'd be seeing it this weekend). And for the longest time I've wanted to attend COMIC-CON, but haven't made the leap yet. :)
ReplyDeleteHahahaha honestly, I don't have a fangirl heart.
ReplyDeleteAt least, not that I can think of... *ponders*
You know I'm a fangirl too. Captain Kirk was the first to steal my heart.
ReplyDeleteI remember Donny from my childhood, but vaguely.
ReplyDeleteI don't get too fangirl over anyone, although I do remember a New Kids on the Block phase ages ago.
Happy Birthday, Leslie! Awesome that you got to see Donny. Being a fangirl can be a riot. I've not had a fangirl moment in some time, but remember those from my childhood with fondness.
ReplyDeleteHappy Birthday!!! I'm definitely a fangirl of The Hobbit!!! The movie is awesome!
ReplyDeleteHappy Birthday Leslie!
ReplyDeletePuppy Love is an awesome song! I even taught it to my grade 4-7 choir kids... the girls LOVE it!
I remember the Donny and Marie show... I have to say that I particularly loved their appealing and wholesome image... is it still the same?
Happy birthday!!!
ReplyDeleteI would love to do a LOTR marathon! I think I would fan girl all over the place if I got to meet Viggo Mortensen. Dear goodness, I love that man, especially as Aragorn. <3
Angela
I love this, Leslie! So cool you got to go to the show, too!
ReplyDeleteNot sure whose fangirl I am. Definitely have soft spots for Chuck Palahniuk and Bruce Campbell, though!
