Take Offs, Parodies, and Spoofs, Oh My

I have a weakness for a good parody. Taking the essence of a story and giving it a humorous twist is an art form in itself.

Here are three examples that would make my personal Parody Hall of Fame.

Galaxy Quest took the Star Trek fanboy/fangirl phenom, turned it on its ear and make a hilarious movie with its own engaging journey.

Jimmy Fallon's spoof, Downton Sixbey, of the currently trending, Downton Abbey is "spit take" hysterical. His show is produced in Studio 6B - hence the name. If you are hooked on Downton Abbey - Downton Sixbey is your next step.

And the newest inductee into my Parody Hall of Fame is:

Yes, it IS a musical parody of Lord of the Rings, Fellowship of the Ring - LIVE on stage.

This wonderful production tells the ENTIRE story of Fellowship of the Ring with all the heart and a thousand times the humor of Tokien's tale.

Fellowship! Is playing in Hollywood for the next two weekends. If you live in the area grab your tickets and get to the theater. If you don't live in the area, make your plane reservations, grab your tickets, and get to the theater. Click on the link above to their website to see if the show is coming your way.

You haven't lived until you've seen a diva Balrog sing a torch song in a red spotlight.

What take offs, spoofs, or parodies would make your Hall of Fame?

  1. Great topic! The TV series _Community_ is one of the best at consistently doing parody of some TV trope or another week after week. If you haven't seen it, you're missing a big treat!

I also love the "mocumentary" kind of film, like _This is Spinal Tap_, _Best of Show_ and the like. They are so hilarious!

If you can handle a little gore, _Shaun of the Dead_ is a super-funny zombie parody film.

  6. I have not seen any of these! I really want to see Jimmy Fallon's spoof! I always enjoy Space Balls (Star Wars) and have a good laugh when I watch it. I just heard two days ago that there is a Harry Potter parody off Broadway called Potted Potter that I would love to see.

  13. Someone sent me a you tube link with a parody of Darth Vader all domestic in his home and slicing carrots with a little vegetable knife that had a green lightsaber. Cracked me up.

  19. I love spoofs and parodies very, very much! (That's partly why I'm writing my current H2WaMM piece on my blog)

I'm going to have to check out Downton Sixbey. Sounds hilarious. I saw this one short clip called "Downton Arby's" which set the cast in an Arby's restaurant. It was pretty hilarious.

As for LOTR parodies, Mirriam at Thoughts of a Shield Maiden has this long, hilarious Lord of the Rings spoof that made me laugh so hard- link here

I'd also love to see Fellowship, alas, I don't think that's in the cards for my near future.
